The background … for some time now the Club has been aware of a water leak somewhere on the property based on the water meter readings from the council. Various club members have searched high and low looking for the source(s) of the leak. Arne has checked the pipes leading to the taps around the greens, Jim and others have looked for signs of moisture around toilets and plumbing fittings and the walls that conceal the pipes. But all to no avail.
A request to provide covered parking for battery powered scooters was submitted to the Executive Committee a few months ago. However it has proven difficult to obtain a grant to build a shelter just inside the front gate, and so the Committee decided that to accommodate the scooters, we would remove the seldom used under cover benches near the front entrance for the scooters.
Jim Winter, our very capable maintenance man, removed the benches one fine morning, then the support timber, only to hear the sound of running water behind the wall. He very quickly screwed the bench support back in place. It turns out that the screw was way too long and had penetrated the water pipe behind.
The water had been leaking out via the screw thread and into the wall cavity for some time, but fortuitously a drain was located almost directly below the leak, so as the water existed from behind the weatherboards, it found its way into the drain!
Hopefully this is the only leak and our water usage goes back to normal levels.
Well done Jim!
