The last championship of the season, Mixed Fours, was held on 15th and 16th August.
Ten teams competed. The teams were closely matched and there were some very exciting and even games making for good entertainment.
The preliminary round took place on the 15th in conditions that followed the complete gamut of weather. The first round was a bit cool as it was early but the second round was warm and sunny with people applying sunscreen! The third game began in cloudy weather however, about a quarter of the way through, black clouds amassed and it began to rain. Teams were called off the green whilst the match committee consulted weather bureaus and each other to make a decision about whether to play on. They decided to try and finish the game and players went back out in light rain to continue. The round was duly completed with 5 teams qualifying for the knock out and finals round on the 16th.
The day dawned cold and cloudy with 3 teams having a bye and coming in later. Two teams however, battled through the cold in a close game with shots being traded back and forth until Pat’s team (John Calton, Nick Bailey and Karen Muir) defeated Brian Cooper’s team (Jim Winter, Beryl Carter, Gay Calderwood) by one point in the final end.
The final was played between Adam Batty (Iraia Peni, Erica Whittaker and Elisabeth Glinkowska) against Pat’s team (John Calton, Nick Bailey and Karen Muir). The conditions were bitterly cold but fortunately the rain stayed away. Some marvellous shots were played especially by the two skippers until eventually Adam’s team pulled away for the win. Congratulations to John, Nick and Karen all new bowlers who competed with determination and skill to make it through to the final.
Congratulations also to Adam, Iraia, Erica and Elisabeth who won the Mixed 4’s Championship for 2026.
