Four teams of triples entered the Balloted Women’s competition which meant that a Round Robin Tournament ensued.
In the first round, games were very close but Jan Lilico’s team (Erica Whittaker, Clare Hack) won against Mary van de Velden team (Heather Stempa, Anne McEwen) and Liz Galloway’s team (Beryl Carter, Irene Poletti) had a narrow win against Kathy Field’s team (Bella Law, Kay Hogan), winning by just one point.
In the second round, Mary’s team put up a spirited defence against Liz’s team but succumbed in the final ends.
Jan Lilico’s team played Kathy’s team and traded blows initially and then had an excellent finish but were undone in the middle portion by not scoring for a few ends.
Due to the cold conditions and because they could not overtake the other teams Mary and Kathy’s team elected not to play the final game.
The other two teams had two wins each and took to the green to compete for the title. Liz’s team got off to a great start and maintained their momentum throughout the game. Jan’s team made an excellent fight back after being 10-3 down in the 6th end, catching up to tie the game at 10 all in the 10th end. This, of course, made the final two ends vital with Liz’ team taking the 11th and meaning Jan’s team needed to win the last end. They were holding 3 shots but Liz had one last bowl to deliver. She came in beautifully to nestle between the three bowls and take out the end.
