New Life Members

A big congratulations to Trevor Turnbull and Brian Cooper who were both awarded Life Memberships at our AGM today.

Trevor was nominated by Robert and Hilary Evans, and Robert gave this speech to support his nomination:

Trevor joined the club in 2006. During Trevor’s time as a member of the club he has been on the executive, holding office as Treasurer (2013-14) and President for three terms from 2014. In 2014 the club became NZ Bowls Club of the Year.

He was on the Fund raising committee that purchased the defibrillator. He was always a very diligent member of the committee and was always available to help out others. He is one of the mainstays in Business House Bowls, sending emails and keeping all those players informed of the programme for the next year.

He has also been a very good all round member looking after Rotary at times and was the club’s greens sprayer. The artificial greens still need spraying with chemicals to kill moss and algae. When we had the cotula green, he was the only member with a license to kill pests that may grow in the roots etc.

However Trevor’s biggest contribution to the club is his ability to continually fill the fences with advertising. The value of this is approximately $8000 per year which equates to about $80 per member off your subs. He always has reserve signage people up his sleeve when someone withdraws. He also filled the score boards and hand books with sponsors.

His latest venture is to secure sponsorship for the proposed new club shirts, it has taken him about three months of negotiation to make it happen.

In view of this outstanding service, I believe he is very worthy of a Life Membership. Thanks again for listening.

Brian was nominated by Les Galloway and Jim Winter gave the following speech to support the nomination:

Life membership is awarded to dedicated, active members. that have contributed towards the building of an enjoyable club atmosphere, progression and growth.

All clubs need personnel that go the extra mile, that participate, join management, take on roles that help the club advance. Brian Cooper is all of these aspects of the club.

He joined 37 years ago in 1989:

  • In 1992 Business House Bowls started and by 1994 Brian was running it. He’s been heavily involved in B.H.B. ever since, that’s 32 teams over 10 weeks every year. The revenue raised is far greater than the club’s entire membership subscriptions.
  • He was Club President in 2003/2004+, Club Captain in 2000/2001, stood again in 2018/2019 year and has held that position ever since and is standing again for it today.
  • He has won 8 titles including singles champ in 1999.
  • He also serves drinks at the club bar, cooks a pretty good batch of fish & chips in the kitchen and isn’t afraid to pick up a microphone at club events and share his wisdom.

There’s bound to be some things I’ve missed, however, I think Brian is definitely worthy of your vote for Life Membership.

After the votes were counted it was overwhelmingly decided to make Trevor and Brian Life Members.
